Who says you need a hefty bank account to look like a million bucks? In my latest blog post, I’m spilling the secrets on how to achieve that coveted expensive look without breaking the bank. From savvy shopping tips to clever style hacks, I’ve got you covered.
1.Charity Shops are your Friend!
When I mention charity shops, I’m talking about the bougie kind – think Knightsbridge and Notting Hill. Here, you can unearth incredible designer pieces at seriously discounted prices. Every visit to these charity shops feels like a treasure hunt, and I often walk out with multiple bargains. Not to brag, but I once scored a Hermes silk scarf for just £50, marked down due to a few minor stains (which, of course, didn’t deter me in the slightest). 2.Vinted and Depop
If luck doesn’t smile on you during your charity shop visits, or if you’re miles away from the prime spots, fear not – there’s a treasure trove of style waiting online. I’d highly recommend checking out platforms like Vinted and Depop, where I’ve personally stumbled upon some incredible deals. Vinted is my personal favorite; it’s where I’ve snagged most of my cherished bags, including two Polene bags, one of which I scored for around £100!
It’s a bit of a waiting game, but I’ve found that it pays off. My strategy? First, check out and try on pieces you like in physical stores, and then keep an eye out for them on these apps. If you don’t spot them right away, don’t despair. With a bit of patience, you’ll often find someone selling your desired item at a more affordable price, or at least something quite similar
3.Knit Items
I wholeheartedly recommend incorporating knitwear into your wardrobe, whether it’s a cozy knit dress or a chic top. Knit pieces have a way of draping and accentuating your silhouette, lending a timeless and chic quality to your style. Personally, I have a soft spot for knit co-ord sets. While cashmere knits are a luxurious choice, you don’t always have to break the bank for them. Brands like Uniqlo or Cos offer some fantastic options that combine quality and style, making it more accessible for everyone.
4.Monochromatic Looks
When it comes to elevating your style, all-black or all-cream colored sets are the way to go. The beauty of black items is that they don’t always reveal the fabric’s quality, so you can certainly find budget-friendly options. However, if you can, it’s worth investing in pieces made from cotton or wool for that extra touch of comfort and durability. Monochromatic looks inherently exude sophistication and cohesiveness. Picture this: black tailored trousers paired with a black turtleneck and a stylish trench coat – voilà! You’ve effortlessly achieved that timeless ‘old-money’ aesthetic.
5.Neutrals
Sticking with neutral colors is a golden rule, especially if you’re not confident in mixing and matching different shades. Neutrals inherently give your outfit a put-together look. There’s something about neutrals that exudes a chic and sophisticated ‘Scandi posh girl’ vibe that I absolutely adore. Picture this: a cozy brown wool coat, walnut shade Tasman Uggs, and a pumpkin spiced latte in hand – that’s when you truly feel super chic!
6.Natural Fibres
When it comes to curating your wardrobe, aim for natural fibers whenever possible. While they might come with a higher price tag, they’re absolutely worth the investment. Remember, you’re building a timeless capsule wardrobe, not a quickly assembled, disposable look. Cotton, wool, silk, linen, and cashmere should be your go-to choices. They not only look and feel different, but they also stand the test of time, making them the foundation of lasting, quality style.
7.Invest in Accessories
Absolutely, I understand we’re discussing small budgets, but sometimes it’s worth splurging, especially when it comes to accessories, and most notably, bags. While no one will be scrutinizing the label on your cozy jumper, a bag’s brand is often very visible and can elevate your entire look. We’re not advocating for flashy logo-covered bags, but rather, investing in classic leathers. Brands like Polene and Demellier excel in delivering both quality and timeless style, making them excellent choices for that well-deserved bag investment.
8.Start with the Basics
Starting with a tight budget, it’s wise to invest in essential wardrobe pieces and gradually build your collection from there. While those flashy items might be tempting, spreading out your purchases is the key. Begin with acquiring basic tops, trousers, and perhaps a versatile cardigan. Stick to this pattern each month until you’ve built a foundation of classic, mix-and-match pieces. Once you have your essentials in place, you can then explore the world of cool trench coats, flashy boots, and other statement items with a more diverse and functional wardrobe.
9.Statement Coat
Your coat is essentially your outfit’s outer layer, the first thing that catches the public eye. It’s a piece that accompanies you everywhere, making it crucial to invest in a stylish yet affordable trench and wool coat. I recommend opting for longer coats, as they not only provide warmth but also add a touch of elegance to your overall look. Pair them with leather knee-high boots for an instantly chic transformation. While coats can often be quite pricey, let’s set a budget of around £300 per coat and explore brands like Arket, Cos, and Massimo Dutti. They excel in creating double-breasted wool coats that are truly unmatched in style and quality.
10.Self-care
Shift the focus from clothes to self-care. Your eyebrows, lashes, and nails play a pivotal role in elevating your overall look. Neutral gel nails are a timeless choice I opt for Russian manicures, and if you’re curious about my favorite nail salons in London for that neat set, feel free to drop a comment on my Pinterest.
As for your brows, lamination and tinting can work wonders. And when it comes to lashes, opt for a natural set or consider lash extensions. Not only do they enhance your look, but they also cut down the time spent on mascara in the morning – a true time-saver that’s 100% worth it, simply take into account the girl math!
